The documentary portrays Marcos Medeiros, a figure in Brazil’s recent history. A student movement leader in 1968, Marcos was imprisoned, tortured, stripped of his political rights and exiled to Europe. He turned to cinema, making shorts with Chris Marker in France and a feature with Glauber Rocha in Cuba, then working with Roberto Rossellini in Italy.
Back in Brazil in the 1980s after the political amnesty, Marcos began pioneering work in video but found no space to develop his art outside commercial conventions. His difficulty integrating into a bourgeois society without utopian ideals led to depression. He died in 1997 after a long period of treatment in a psychiatric institution.
